Antonius Gryphius (1527-1599) was a French printer during the first half of the sixteenth century in Lyon, and son of the celebrated printer Sebastian Gryphius. Bibles published by the Gryphius Printing House are exceedingly rare and valuable. First published in 1550, this later edition was printed in 1569 and includes the first books of the Old Testament - The Pentateuch, Joshua, Judges, and Ruth. Measuring only 4 ¾” by 3” wide by 1 ¼” thick, this 16th-century bible has an old vellum binding with loop and ball strap closures. There are some old bug holes, mainly to the edges and bottom right corner margins. A few bug holes affect the printed marginal text, but they don't affect the main text. There are some light brown water stains on a handful of pages at the beginning and end, but the pages are generally clean and unmarked. The binding and both leather straps and intact. Here is a very rare {no longer in print} facsimile from 2009 of the MATTHEWS BIBLE [TYNDALE, COVERDALE, ROGERS]. This Bible has the Divine Name Jehovah written as "JEHOUAH" at Exodus 6:3 - The footnote at Exodus 6:3 says that God's name is JEHOUAH of which no other creature is named. Much is written by the Watchtower Society on the works of Tyndale and Coverdale. This Bible is written in beautiful Gothic Roman script. This Bible is large and heavy [see photos]. The Matthew Bible, also known as Matthew’s Bible and Matthew’s Version, was an early compilation of English translations of the books of the Bible. It was first published in 1537 by an Englishman named John Rogers, who used the name Thomas Matthew in an attempt to protect his identity and conceal William Tyndale’s involvement in the project. At that time, it was illegal in England to translate the Bible into English.The complete New Testament and much of the Old Testament of the Matthew Bible was from the Tyndale Bible, the translation work William Tyndale was able to complete before his martyrdom. The rest of the Old Testament and most of the Apocrypha were the work of Myles Coverdale. Thomas Matthew (John Rogers) himself translated the Prayer of Manasseh.
